Bavaria is where the big players in the pharmaceutical industry are located, where biotechnology is developed and where major investments are made in the expansion of the health infrastructure. It is here that the future of the health industry is being moulded with unique expertise and a great deal of state funding.
Health and Life Sciences
Health is one of the megatrends of our time and already permeates all areas of life. As Europe’s premier high-tech location, Bavaria is also setting international standards in the fields of life sciences and health, as this is where unique expertise is concentrated. The Munich region alone is home to around 250 life science companies as well as two elite universities, two university hospitals and three biological-medical Max Planck Institutes.
The Nuremberg-Erlangen region is also a leading location in this field. Alongside the Forum MedTech Pharma e.V. – the largest network in the healthcare industry in Europe – the Medical Valley, one of the most innovative medical technology clusters in the world, has also emerged there. Work on the major trends in the health industry is taking place everywhere, for example, in personalised medicine, artificial intelligence and robotics.
The future has just begun! Accordingly, Bavaria has a lot planned and is investing millions of euros. Not only in ideas and potential, but also in hospitals, facilities for prevention and rehabilitation, spas and health resorts. Bavaria is dedicated to forging a thriving future that is focused on health. Take advantage of this expertise with your industry event and unlock new opportunities!
Medical Technology
With augmented reality in the operating theatre and artificial intelligence for accurate diagnoses, medical technology is an industry of the future that is growing worldwide by an impressive six percent every year. In Bavaria alone, around 500 companies are active in this field, generating an annual turnover of ten billion euros.
This is a testament to the quality of Bavaria as a business location, as is the speed with which products are launched on the market: More than 30 percent of sales come from products that are not older than three years.
Strong networks within the Free State play a pivotal role in the industry’s success. In addition to MedTech Pharma e.V. and Medical Valley, which includes Siemens Healthineers, the Munich-based EIT Health also provides valuable solutions for high-performance healthcare systems.
Biotechnology
Bavaria equals biotech: an equation that works out when you consider the more than 400 companies, 70 research institutions and four elite universities that are innovatively engaged in this interdisciplinary science in the Free State.
Bavaria is a world-class biotech location. The Munich Metropolitan Region in particular is a true biotech pioneer, the number one in Germany and also among the leaders in Europe. This is partly due to the two Biotechnology Innovation and Start-up Centres (IZB) in Freising-Weihenstephan and in Planegg-Martinsried, which focus on medicines and services as well as phytopharmaceuticals.
Bavaria’s second largest biotech region is the Upper Palatinate, where 63 companies from the life sciences sector pool their expertise in the BioRegio Regensburg cluster. Given this concentrated expertise, suitably renowned trade fairs are held in Bavaria. In Munich, for example, analytica is planned for 2024 and Bio-Europe for 2023.
Pharmaceutical Industry
Where big players feel at home: With Roche, Novartis and Bristol Myers Squibb, three of the most successful pharmaceutical companies in the world have established themselves in Bavaria. Together with the original Bavarian industry giant Hexal and Teva, the world market leader in generics, they achieve annual sales of 4.5 billion euros.
And things are set to get even better in the future: According to a study by the BASYS Institute in Augsburg, Bavaria has major growth potential as a pharmaceutical location, which provides the best prerequisites for holding your industry event in Bavaria.
Healthcare Facilities
Being healthy in Bavaria is not only attributed to the unspoiled nature and the "traditionally different", cosy lifestyle but also to the infrastructure that supports it. With 400 accredited acute care hospitals, 285 facilities dedicated to prevention and rehabilitation and 53 highly acclaimed health resorts and spas, Bavaria guarantees top-notch healthcare.
Investments are being made to ensure that this remains unchanged: The federal state is currently spending over 340 million euros on the expansion and new construction of the health infrastructure. And the supply of qualified academic specialists is also guaranteed: Practically nowhere in Germany are there more medical university faculties than in Bavaria.
