IKT und Digitalisierung
ICT and Digitalisation

Digital twins, adaptive machines and sophisticated robots: ICT and digitalisation belong to the most important industries of the 21st century – and are truly Bavarian to boot.

ICT and Digitalisation

Digital twins, adaptive machines and sophisticated robots: What for laypeople may sound like science fiction has long been a reality in the Bavarian economy. Information and communication technology (ICT) as well as digitalisation are the key technologies of the 21st century.

The Free State of Bavaria has recognised this and is investing heavily as a result. Within the framework of Bavaria’s High-Tech Agenda, for example, billions have been and are being invested to advance the technologies of tomorrow. Bavaria is striving for the top position in this area and is ensuring the implementation of the appropriate research and development projects.

In the field of quantum technology, for example, which enables precise measurements and extremely fast calculations, among other capabilities. In sensor technology, which has the potential to make cities more energy efficient. Or in the area of artificial intelligence, which allows machines to independently optimise processes.

ICT and digitalisation are versatile, fast-growing economic sectors that are particularly strong in Bavaria. Digital start-up centres also offer a breath of fresh air, embodying the spirit of “traditionally different”. It’s an inspiring setting for your event, where you can best connect your guests with industry insiders.

IT and Communication

Apple, Microsoft and Huawei: Some of the biggest IT companies in the world have opened their German headquarters in Bavaria. That makes the Free State one of the most important IT locations around the world. Around 20,000 companies in the sector employ more than 380,000 skilled workers here.
In order to further strengthen Bavaria's leading position in high-tech, companies, universities and research institutes are joining forces – for example at the Cluster Zentrum Digitalisierung.Bayern in Garching near Munich or at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Nuremberg.

Quantum Technology

Whether it is the development of new materials, 100 per cent data encryption or ultra-precise measurements of time and gravity, quantum technology unlocks unimagined possibilities. And it’s only just getting started. In Oberpfaffenhofen-Weßling near Munich, for example, the DLR Institute of Communication and Navigation is working on the development and commercialisation of quantum computer-resistant cryptosystems, also known as post-quantum cryptosystems. The Free State is supporting them and thereby actively contributing to making Bavaria the world’s leading location for quantum technology.

Sensor Technology

They can see, hear and feel: Sensors are some of the most important system technologies of the 21st century. As sensory organs of technology, they can provide data on autonomous mobility, automation or energy efficiency. Bavaria occupies a leading position nationwide in this fast-growing sector.
Does your company work in the field of technical sensor technology? Then the network “Sensorik Bayern” is an excellent starting point for you. Bavarian universities, research institutions and highly innovative companies such as ams OSRAM, Sumida and Infineon have formed a strategic partnership within this network.

Software

It unites the physical with the virtual world, brings machines to life and makes it possible to visualise entire production companies with just a few clicks: Software has long since become an essential part of working life in almost every industry and it is impossible to imagine our world without it. This is especially true in Bavaria, where major players in software development and production have established themselves. For example, SAP, IBM and Cancom are located in the Munich area known as the “Isar Valley”. The area around Nuremberg, on the other hand, is home to global companies such as Siemens Digital Industries and DATEV. It is no surprise then that the Franconian capital regularly hosts it-sa, Europe’s leading trade fair for IT security. Why not also take advantage of the concentrated expertise and extensive industry networks in Bavaria for your event?

Artificial Intelligence

Fast, precise, adaptive: artificial intelligence (AI) – the optimal interplay between humans and machines – is one of the key industries of the future and will increasingly shape and simplify our lives.
The Free State of Bavaria has invested several hundred million euros to promote this future-oriented industry in Bavaria. Among other projects, investments are being made in the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems, which is closely linked to the universities and Bavarian industry.
Bavarian companies use AI in many forms. As an intelligent safety and assistance system in cars, for example, as used by BMW. Or, as an “omniscient interpreter” that converts text into speech, for which IBM Watson offers a solution.

Digital Start-up Centres

Companies grow most successfully in places where the right environment fosters their development. Bavaria’s goal is to ensure that the best companies continue to establish themselves in the Free State. However, the region does not solely rely on the attractiveness of the numerous global players already present. It also guides and supports startups in 19 digital start-up centres, which receive a total of 120 million euros in funding. In these start-up centres, such as the IGZ Würzburg or Allgäu Digital, a strong network of established companies, universities and research institutions awaits innovative newcomers.
