Bavaria is home to numerous global players from the automotive, aviation and aerospace industries. All of them are interconnected through optimally positioned logistics.
Mobility
Mobility is an extremely dynamic sector in Bavaria. And not just since yesterday. Especially in the automotive and aerospace industries, technical developments from Bavaria have become indispensable. Did you know that the airbag and the diesel engine were once invented in the Free State?
Nowadays, however, almost every new passenger aircraft manufactured around the world incorporates high-tech “Made in Bavaria”. The Bavarian automotive industry is at least as successful. Companies and global players such as Audi and BMW, which even bears the Free State in its name as Bayerische Motorenwerke, continue to set new standards with their developments in the field of electromobility.
Bavaria is excellently positioned in terms of infrastructure, services and sustainable concepts. Even though it is not located by the sea, ships can dock at 24 ports in Bavaria. And with three international airports, 137,000 kilometres of road network and 6,500 kilometres of rail network, your Bavarian business event guests will also travel comfortably to any venue.
The success of the Bavarian mobility industry would not be possible without smoothly running logistics. Because this is the foundation for the success of each individual company. The global division of labour has developed so rapidly that new logistics concepts and fast, reliable transport routes and means are needed to connect companies around the world. Bavaria offers innovative solutions for highly efficient freight transport, material flow and plant logistics.
Automotive
One of Bavaria's key industries is the automotive, commercial vehicle and vehicle industry, which employs almost 208,000 people. Audi, BMW and MAN are the big shots, but a total of around 1,100 companies produce along the automotive production chain. These include large suppliers such as Bosch, Brose, Dräxlmaier Group, Rexroth, Schaeffler, Webasto, as well as many small and medium-sized companies. Together, they generate almost a third of Bavaria's industrial turnover. And they think “traditionally different”, that is, future-oriented – Bavarian vehicle manufacturers are among the most innovative companies in the world when it comes to electromobility, connectivity and autonomous driving.
All over the country, renowned research institutes and university research groups are dealing with the question of what the future of mobility could look like. The Fraunhofer Institutes IIS for Integrated Circuits and IGVC for Foundry, Composite and Processing Technology, as well as the iwb User Centre in Garching near Munich and Augsburg, exemplify excellent Bavarian research.
Aerospace
Bavaria is taking off as one of the most renowned aerospace locations in Europe. Would you like a few numbers? 38,000 engineers, technicians and experts, 450 companies, 11 billion euros in annual turnover.
Bavaria is home to manufacturers of special equipment as well as leading international scientific and educational institutions. The main focus is on the construction of aircraft, aircraft engines, helicopters and spacecraft. The hotspot of the industry is the Space Valley surrounding Munich. The triangle between Garching, Ottobrunn and Oberpfaffenhofen is home to numerous start-ups and global players such as Airbus Defence and Space, Airbus Helicopters and MTU Aero Engines, as well as important suppliers such as Liebherr.
The Faculty of Aeronautics, Astronautics and Geodesy (LRG) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), founded in spring 2018, also relies on the high-tech location of Ottobrunn / Taufkirchen. Space Valley is also home to world-renowned institutions such as the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the German Space Operations Center (GSOC), the Galileo Control Center (GCC) and the Galileo Competence Center.
Logistics
How does what get where and when? The logistics sector in Bavaria has this under control – with an annual turnover of 36 billion euros and more than 400,000 employees, it represents an important economic segment.
Almost all important logistics companies operate in the Free State – from DHL and UPS to Schenker and Hellmann. The global player Dachser is even a “native Bavarian”, and DPD Germany has its headquarters in Franconia. In addition, numerous foreign companies such as Amazon have chosen Bavaria as the location for their goods distribution centres.
For good reason: with three international commercial airports, five modern goods traffic centres and 24 ports with connections to Europe’s most important waterway, the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal, Bavaria is virtually predestined to smoothly transport goods of all kinds.
Even “transport logistic”, the world's leading trade fair for logistics, mobility, IT and supply chain management, is held in Munich. Rest assured that your industry event will be taking place in a highly professional, advanced environment.
